newcleo is a clean and safe nuclear technology company. Privately funded and headquartered in London, UK, newcleo was launched in 2021 to be a disruptor in the field of nuclear energy. Its mission is to generate safe, clean, economic and inexhaustible energy for the world, through a radically innovative combination of existing, accessible technologies.

newcleo is building the next generation system with the goals to:

  1. eliminate the need for geological repositories by using a fast neutron flux avoiding the production of long life radioactive elements;
  2. accelerate the development of new fuel cycles, including MOX (Mixed Pu-U Oxides) and eventually thorium, that provide clean, safe and inexhaustible energy from nuclei and the opportunity to burn the long-lived nuclear waste produced by the old generation of nuclear reactors;
  3. ultimately develop an Accelerator Driven System (ADS), based on the intrinsically safe coupling of a particle accelerator and a sub-critical reactor.

With visionary co-founders, newcleo brings together an international team of senior engineers with deep knowledge of nuclear energy and new recruits with a fresh mindset, working to develop designs based on innovative Lead-cooled Fast Reactors (LFRs). These LFRs will meet the commercial demand for small terrestrial waste-to-energy reactors.

In the UK, newcleo’s immediate focus is on delivering a prototype 30MWe LFR by 2030 followed by an initial battery of 4-6 x 200MWe reactors with deployment in the early 2030s. We are building our team to meet this challenging and exciting objective.

newcleo wants to be the first step toward the evolution of its industry to become fully respectful of people and the environment. To develop a new, sustainable, and completely safe way of generating nuclear energy that will lead humanity to zero emissions, and to the mitigation of global warming.

Job Description

This central role will be key in developing the capabilities required for safe and reliable operation of the newcleo fleet in the UK. In the near term, the manager will work seamlessly with the Technical Project Manager on the technical integration and engineering project management across UK projects,  You will support the UK project engineering team to initiate, coordinate and oversee the full project lifecycle from initial feasibility and concept design through to as-built drawings, acting as Intelligent Customer in close collaboration with the Design Authority. You will develop the strategies for equipment reliability, maintenance and engineering programs to support site licensing and safe and reliable operation. You will work with the Design Authority Manager and Technical Project Manager, ensuring that requirements are incorporated in the specification and the design and the safety case are fit for purpose, linking planned V&V, Testing and Commissioning of the design to the future operational baseline. You will work with the Design Authority and the Project team to develop the engineering and design authority capability for the operating organisation   You will work closely with newcleo colleagues and key stakeholders to ensure the design is safe, affordable, consentable and meets all UK regulatory requirements.

Main Activities

  • Support the Technical Project Manager for the engineering and technical integration aspects of newcleo’s UK nuclear new build projects, starting with a 200MWe first commercial unit, in line with newcleo’s responsibilities as a prospective nuclear site license holder and intelligent customer duties and working in close collaboration with colleagues across newcleo both in the UK and overseas.
  • Support the Technical Project Manager for site feasibility studies, including site investigations, ensuring engineering and broad project development issues are identified and progressively resolved.

  • Provide support to the safety case team in ensuring that design information and evidence is available when needed to meet the safety case schedule and that any regulatory issues are quickly addressed and resolved with the designers.
  • Develop the equipment reliability, maintenance and engineering program strategies for operation of the LFR-AS-200 in the UK to deliver safe, reliable and commercially competitive power generation. Work collaboratively with the Technical Project Manager and the Design Authority Manager to ensure the design and safety case appropriately capture requirements for these strategies.
  • Lead on the development of Operating Limits and Conditions for the design to be captured in the Safety Case and begin to define the operating envelope for the LFR-AS-200.
  • Support the Technical Project Manager in the development of V&V and testing strategies for the design through to full plant commissioning, ensuring testing strategies will provide adequate baseline for future inservice testing requirements.
  • Act as the overall Topic Lead for Engineering topics in the GDA, providing a balanced and cohesive approach across the topics to ensure a safe, affordable, consentable and operable design.
