newcleo is the clean and safe nuclear technology company, incorporated in 2021 with USD118m initial private capital to be a disruptor in the field of nuclear energy. Currently running a EUR300m equity raise. Its mission is to generate safe, clean, sustainable and inexhaustible energy for the world, through a radically innovative combination of existing, accessible technologies at competitive costs. The company’s long-term vision is to build a new industrial standard in nuclear energy with the best possible choices in terms of safety and sustainability.
Our focus is to build and design a new generation of Fast Reactors using lead as coolant (LFRs) allowing a substantial reduction of radioactive waste and a 100x more efficient use of fuel at competitive costs and incomparable safety.
Our mid-term strategy is to establish MOX (Mixed Pu-U Oxides) manufacturing, for cost effective, cleaner, and virtually inexhaustible production of nuclear energy, burning the existing waste from the current nuclear industry and therefore with no need to mine additional fissile materials.
Eventually we aim to build an ADS: a system coupling a subcritical core with a particle accelerator to implement a nuclear cascade, intrinsically safe thanks to the ability to stop the nuclear reaction immediately, by switching off the accelerator. The ADS will be developed also deploying innovative fuels, including thorium, a more abundant element, not requiring enrichment, that can be used in its natural form and won’t produce plutonium or other transuranic elements.
newcleo is headquartered in London, with an international research and development centre in Turin, Italy, and a subsidiary in France. With over 100 nuclear physicists and engineers – our “energy innovators”, led by a senior team with 300+ years of Fast Reactors collective experience, newcleo is building its first non-nuclear prototype in ENEA’s laboratory in Brasimone.

newcleo is a clean and safe nuclear technology company. Privately funded and headquartered in London, UK,
newcleo was launched in 2021 to be a disruptor in the field of nuclear energy. Its mission is to generate
safe,
clean, economic and inexhaustible energy for the world, through a radically innovative combination of existing,
accessible technologies.
newcleo is building the next generation system with the goals to:
- eliminate the need for geological repositories by using a fast neutron flux avoiding the production of long life
radioactive elements; - accelerate the development of new fuel cycles, including MOX (Mixed Pu-U Oxides) and eventually thorium, that
provide
clean, safe and inexhaustible energy from nuclei and the opportunity to burn the long-lived nuclear waste
produced by
the old generation of nuclear reactors; - ultimately develop an Accelerator Driven System (ADS), based on the intrinsically safe coupling of a particle
accelerator and a sub-critical reactor.
With visionary co-founders, newcleo brings together an international team of senior engineers with deep
knowledge of
nuclear energy and new recruits with a fresh mindset, working to develop designs based on innovative Lead-cooled
Fast
Reactors (LFRs). These LFRs will meet the commercial demand for small terrestrial waste-to-energy reactors.
In the UK, newcleo’s immediate focus is on delivering a prototype 30MWe LFR by 2030 followed by an initial
battery
of
4-6 x 200MWe reactors with deployment in the early 2030s. We are building our team to meet this challenging and
exciting
objective.
newcleo wants to be the first step toward the evolution of its industry to become fully respectful of
people and the
environment. To develop a new, sustainable, and completely safe way of generating nuclear energy that will lead
humanity
to zero emissions, and to the mitigation of global warming.

About newcleo
Privately funded and headquartered in London, newcleo was launched in 2021 to be a disruptor in the field of nuclear energy. Its mission is to generate safe, clean, economic and practically inexhaustible energy for the world, through a radically innovative combination of existing, accessible technologies.
With visionary co-founders, newcleo capitalises on thirty years of R&D activity in metal-cooled fast reactors and liquid-lead cooling systems, and our senior management and advisory team can boast hundreds of years in cumulative hands-on experience.
newcleo’s technology, mostly comprising a novel approach to already qualified solutions, addresses equally well the three challenges affecting the nuclear industry to date: waste, safety and cost.
Waste: Our fast reactors are capable of efficient “burning” (i.e., fission) of depleted uranium, plutonium and Minor Actinides. When operated with MOX fuel generated from reprocessed nuclear waste, our reactors not only ensure sustainability by closing the fuel cycle, but can also boost energy independence
Safety: Our lead-cooled reactors operate at atmospheric pressure. The properties of lead (thermal capacity and conductivity, boiling point, chemically inert, low neutron activation, shielding properties) together with newcleo’s passive safety systems ensure very high levels of safety
Cost: Our reactor design has been optimised over the last 20 years leading to the concept of an ultra-compact and transportable 200MWe modules with improvements in energy density compared to other technologies. Costs are kept low by means of simplicity, compactness, modularity, atmospheric pressure operation and elevated output temperature.
In the UK, newcleo’s immediate focus is on delivering a prototype 30MWe LFR by 2030 followed by an initial battery of 4-6 x 200MWe reactors with deployment planned for the early 2030s. We are also considering options for the manufacture and supply of MOX fuel. We are building our team to meet this challenging and exciting objective.
